A father was trying to read the newspaper,
but his little son kept pestering him.
Finally, the father grew tired of this and,
tearing a page from the newspaper
- one that bore a map of the world -
he cut it into several pieces and handed them to his son.
‘Right, now you’ve got something to do.
I’ve given you a map of the world and I want to see if you can put it back together correctly.’
He resumed his reading,
knowing that the task would keep the child occupied for the rest of the day.
However, a quarter of an hour later, the boy returned with the map.
‘Has your mother been teaching you geography?’ asked his father in astonishment.
‘I don’t even know what that is,’ replied the boy.
‘But there was a photo of a man on the other side of the page,
so I put the man back together and found I’d put the world back together too.’
-Paulo Coelho
now, what is the moral of this story?
i know i'm trying to analyse a professional writer's work
and may have made mistakes,
so if you really think that i have indeed commited fallacy,
feel free to criticise.
We can view this story on the surface and in depth,
in both ways, we still gain a little knowledge.
On the surface level,
the boy, despite his lack of knowledge on geographical studies,
he has indeed pieced the map back together.
how has he managed to do it?
he turned the map around and pieced another picture together,
the picture of a man, obviously enough,
he should know the generic outlook of a man.
that goes to show that this child,
has found an alternative solution to the problem that was posed to him,
he had not chosen to ponder aimlessly, and not progress.
This, teaches us to look at things from different angles,
and not just the plain and simple one degree view.
when you think that the problem is unsolvable,
change your perception and perhaps,
you might find a solution.
In depth,
knowing Paulo Coelho as a spiritual writer,
his writings are bound to be philosophical most of the time.
the words from the boy,
"i put the man back together and found i'd put the world back together too."
struck me as something that contained a hidden meaning.
Man, can be refered to as humanity,
and now, the world is at shambles,
not exactly the world but look at the Iran war,
the Tamil Tigers bombings in Sri Lanka,
all this are signs of a divided world.
If somehow, people are united as one, peace would resume,
hence the world working together at peace.
human, we always think of how we can shape the world,
but rarely do we see a need to change ourselves,
we are so full of ourselves that we disregard the need to put ourselves in place,
when all humans do a part in correcting themselves,
the world will be so much a better place.
Think about it, i might be right,
i might be wrong. feel free to critisise or tag about it.
